Location: Prince George's County, Maryland

Description: Phase III archaeological investigations at an 18th century plantation for the client, Washington Management & Development, prior to residential development. More than 600 square meters of area were excavated, which resulted in locating the remains of six structures, trash pits, privies, a work shop, and thousands of artifacts.

Significant Facts:

  • Excavations unearthed one of the most complete organizational plans of an eighteenth-century plantation in Prince George's County (MD).
  • Maryland Historical Trust project of significance (2005).
  • Archival research and artifact analysis contributed to better understanding of the daily life of eighteenth-century residents of Prince George's County (MD), including the enslaved African-American workforce.
  • The large artifact assemblage (15,000+ items) indicates the plantation owner was successfully engaged in a commercialized agricultural business that allowed purchases of imported items from China, Germany, and the Caribbean.
  • Residential complex planning and development ongoing while excavations, analysis, and report writing occurred.
