Description: G&O prepared an Environmental Assessment for the rehabilitation of the U.S. Marine Corps (Iwo Jima) War Memorial. The project entailed site improvements to the parade grounds, repairs to the deteriorating concrete at the memorial, and different lighting options to illuminate the statue at night. Impact topics studied in detail included cultural resources, aesthetics, night sky, and visitor experience.
Significant Facts:
- A nighttime lighting mockup was held with the National Park Service and the Commission of Fine Arts staff in order to assess the potential visual impacts of three different lighting options for the Memorial. Based on this field review, and in coordination with the Commission on Fine Arts, the impacts of each scenario were studied in detail in the Environmental Assessment, and a preferred lighting option was selected.
