Location: Okaloosa and Santa Rosa Counties, FloridaDescription: This award-winning project included the demolition, design, and construction of four new rest area facilities in Florida's adjacent Okaloosa and Santa Rosa Counties. More than 57,000 SF of facility space, housing restrooms, maintenance offices, and security offices were built, covering 108 acres.
Significant Facts:- Received the 2005 Florida Department of Transportation/Florida Transportation Builders Association (FDOT/FBTA) Award for Best in Construction in the Design/Build category.
- This project applied "crime prevention through environmental design" (CPTED), featuring improved sight lines and other unique features to enhance security.
- This was the first FDOT project for which the project team was responsible for all design-build services, including right-of-way/land acquisition, complete design and permitting (both environmental and construction), utility acquisition, coordination, and construction. This process is part of the FDOT practice of using alternative construction methodologies to improve and expedite construction projects.
