Headline: Rehabilitation and Seismic Retrofit Design of I-95 Wilmington, Delaware Viaduct
Client: Delaware Department of Transportation (DELDOT)
Location: Wilmington, Delaware

Description: Rehabilitation and Seismic Retrofit Design of I-95 Viaduct. Originally built in 1962, the Wilmington (DE) Viaduct is a 60-span, 5066-foot-long dual steel girder structure with 7 associated interchange ramps carrying I-95 over city streets, a bus depot, a playground, and Amtrak electrified rail and Norfolk Southern (NS) railroad.

Significant Facts:

  • G&O developed phased traffic control plans (TCP) and timed various construction activities to coordinate with other area construction and traffic control, which minimized community and motorist impact.
  • Significant restrictions along the viaduct and the amount of structures rehabilitation needed, especially for the seismic retrofit details, made construction staging very complex.
  • Completed on-time and within budget, this was one of the largest rehabilitation projects ever undertaken by the Delaware Department of Transportation.
